ACADEMICS

We understand that every student has different academic needs.  We believe in a proactive approach designed to meet the individual needs of our students through our five step process.  Our coaches and mentors reinforce academic accountability throughout the program.  Current and former educators assist with ongoing academic curriculum to enhance the learning experience.

.
5 Steps to Academic Success

Step 1: Academic Goal Setting

Students are introduced to the SMART goal setting approach designed to create individual academic plans.  Goals are written down on paper and students are encouraged to seek out accountability partners who can provide additional support as they progress towards their desired outcomes.

Step 2: Transcript Evaluation

With the recently updated NCAA academic guidelines, it is more important than ever to make sure students are on a path towards academic eligibility.  Classes taken as early as eighth grade can apply towards their core course requirements.  Because NCAA requirements differ from high school graduation requirements, it is essential that parents and students understand how to determine which classes are accepted by the NCAA.

Step 3: Tutoring

It is common for certain students to need additional help in specific subject areas.  Tutoring assistance is available to all Achieve More Sports participants.

Step 4:  SAT/ACT Preparation

Qualifying ACT test scores are required before student-athletes can receive financial assistance from colleges and universities.  In order to better prepare Achieve More Sports participants for the SAT/ACT test, student-athletes have access to practice tests and content review in English, Math, Reading, and Science.

Step 5: College Needs Assessment

Our college needs assessment guides families through the decision making process by identifying the most important to the individual student.  Factors such as academic degree offerings, job placement rates, school size, and location play a major role when choosing an institution.  This process has paid dividends as the vast majority of our alums are on pace to finish their degree at their original institution.

BASKETBALL

Sport has the power to shape and mold lives – but only when kept in perspective by mentors willing to capture teachable moments.  Participation in the Achieve More Sports basketball program serves as the “hook” that allows us to impact youth beyond the court.  Basketball provides a safe training ground for the young men in our program to experience some enduring life lessons such as…

  • We must respect a basic set of rules and boundaries
  • We don’t win all the time, we don’t lose all the time
  • We must learn to work with those with of different races, backgrounds and talents
  • We must make personal sacrifices for the good of the group
  • We can’t control our circumstances but we can always choose our response
  • We must be poised, disciplined and coachable

LEADERSHIP

The world our youth grow up in today is ever changing.  With the advancements in technology and social media, young people have a platform that allows them to engage the world like never before.  Our coaches and mentors lead weekly discussions on such topics including perseverance, etiquette, compassion, body language, punctuality and much more.  Our ultimate measure of success will not be defined on the basketball court.  It will be determined by the quality of husband, father and leader these young men turn out to become in the future.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

One of our primary goals is to cultivate a generation of servant leaders.  By partnering with other area organizations, our participants are exposed to the needs of others and provided opportunities to serve those less fortunate. Our desire is that they develop a habit of seeking ways to impact their community.
